Ultrasonic Liposuction Risks
Ultrasonic assisted liposuction, also known as ultrasonic liposuction, has become less popular with surgeons because of the risks and complications. The most experienced plastic surgeons consider it not as safe as other liposuction procedures.
When the devices were sold in Europe, doctors noted complications and the items were removed from the market. Somehow, ultrasonic liposuction devices appeared in the United States, claiming to be medically sophisticated and the newest thing in liposuction and weight reduction surgery. American surgeons stopped buying the product and the company eventually went out of business.
Ultrasonic liposuction has been related to several problems such as:
- Blood clotting
- Peripheral nerve damage
- Build up of infected fluid
Peripheral nerve damage can occur in various parts of the body and can far outweigh any benefits. One particular web site claims that the results are similar to that of traditional liposuction but with increased risks. It explains that ultrasonic liposuction is not a replacement of other therapy, but an enhancement.
The Risks
Other risks can also be involved in ultrasonic liposuction such as bruising, scarring, and fluid retention,. Even a qualified surgeon can experience complications and difficulties. It is very important that your doctor has admitting and treatment privileges at a hospital you are close to and familiar with. Some doctors have the privilege of admitting patients, but cannot treat them in that hospital. This is the type of information an informed patient needs to be aware of and be confident with the answers.
Some ultrasonic liposuction complications can occur even after the surgery. While the procedure may not cause significant scarring, the patient may end up with loose or rippled skin, or brown spots caused by pigmentation changes. It is also possible that the procedure will produce an uneven appearance, requiring more procedures to correct the appearance of the body.
Smoking, drinking, or taking any drugs can complicate the ultrasonic liposuction surgery as can uncontrolled diabetes. All these can cause serious infections and/or inability to heal correctly. Some drugs regulate the blood clotting and patients should not be taking aspirin products before surgery.
There are also some rare and potentially life threatening complications to note having any surgical procedure including ultrasonic liposuction. These include reactions to local and general anesthesia and internal organ damage. It is possible to also suffer from excessive blood loss, excessive I.V. fluid intake, hypothermia, and infection. Potential allergic reactions to medication, pneumonia, cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmias, and brain damage if oxygen is deprived during anesthesia. Seizures and death are the most significant complication concerns.
